Golden Globes Best and Worst

Awards season 2015: here we go!

First of all, I have not seen too many movies this year for whatever reason, but I did see The Imitation Game on Christmas day and it is the best. I think it should win every award from now on! I am a full fledged Cumberbitch now!

Now lets talk about clothes. There was a lot of white on the red carpet, and a lot of rather simple dresses. Lots of glamorous mermaid and column silhouettes rather than more fashion forward unique choices. It seemed relatively understated overall, but very elegant. A lot of pretty and sexy dresses, but not many statement fashion pieces. A good steady start to Awards season.

My Best:

Amy Adams

Amy Adams: At first I thought this was a little boring, but frankly it’s quite impeccable. Usually she chooses a bolder color, so I was surprised she went for a pastel blue. The draping and the fit couldn’t be better. If it wasn’t perfect I think it would fall in the realm of bridesmaid dress, but Amy did it right!

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain: She always cracks me up because she seems like such a sweet, understated person during the red carpet interviews, but she really serves up the drama with her dress every single time. Not a groundbreaking silhouette but it’s definitely working for her and I love a metallic!

Anna Kendrick

Anna Kendrick: Anna is a Kate Spade spokesperson, and this gown seems very Kate Spade-ish to me so it makes sense. I like that it’s classic but has some interest with the beading. It works very well for her.

Reese

Reese Witherspoon: This is very plain but I think it’s just done very well. There were several stars that did similar looks, but the metallic kicks it up a notch. I don’t know that Reese is usually this sparkly so I was happy to see her amp it up a little. (The one thing that would have pushed it up one more notch would be some big sapphire statement pieces to add some interest)

My Worst:

Rosamund Pike

Rosamund Pike: The concept of the dress is not terrible. I find it ill-fitting and very unflattering on her. It seems like the straps are two inches too long.

Amanda Peet

Amanda Peet: She usually leans towards a retro look (somewhere from 1920’s-1940’s), so this dress does not surprise me for her. I wish it was a little less blah. If the waist was defined with a wide band and it bloused out a little above the natural waist, it might be a little more flattering. With a little nip and a tuck it would be so much better, it’s just too much blousey material.

Taylor Schilling

Taylor Schilling: The dress is not a bad dress, but the whole look seems way too severe and she does not look her best. I think it’s the middle part, strong eye brows, and red lips. It’s a little much.

George Clooney, Amal Clooney

Amal Clooney: Could this be more of a snooze? I think she was trying to be subtle so she wouldn’t steal George’s thunder, but I was very disappointed.

Favorite Things

The other day, I was in a clothing store with my mom, and she totally called me out. I picked up an off white – crew neck – pullover sweatshirt, and said, “oh, I neeeeeed this!” And she promptly responded, “Sadie, you have at least 10 of those already…”  Point taken, but she wasn’t 100% correct.

Some of them are white, and some of them are grey…

Long story short, I live for a crew neck white/off white/heather grey sweatshirt/sweater. I am not a fan of hoods on sweatshirts or jackets (I never use them and they get in the way). And I love a zipper for the right reasons, but not on my sweatshirt, thank you. So crew neck pullovers are the style for me.

Fashion at the Oscars

Just when I thought awards season was done, the Academy Awards snuck in at the end. I actually did not watch much of the actual show (I’ve already seen enough of this year’s batch of nominees), but of course I watched the red carpet. It looked like white and very pale colors were a huge trend this year. Some people made it look elegant, and some people made it look like they were just wrapped in sheets or toilet paper. All in all, though, I think people were pretty safe, there were no drop dead fashion forward stunners, and no catastrophes, I guess people are taking the Oscars seriously.

The Best:

Amy Adams: This look is not so dis-similar from her SAG choice, but when it works, it works! The color is great for her, and I love a simple dress with some interesting structural elements.

Kate Hudson: This is the definition of glamour. Definitely riding the white and metallic trends, I think this is a good mix of fashion forward and classic.

Cate Blanchett: I think this is the best she’s looked so far this year. She definitely looks better than many starlets half her age. It’s unique but fabulous.

The Worst:

Lupita Nyong’o: She had a really good run this year, but I am not thrilled with her final dress of the season (that being said, I’m sure she’ll be on many best dressed lists anyway). Lupita Nyong’o was making waves, but this choice seems kind of princessy and unflattering for her (not to mention the Cinderella headband). I wish the color was richer and the structure on the bodice wasn’t so blah.

Elsa Pataky: (aka Chris Hemsworth’s wife) I am going to hell for saying this, I am sorry. In my opinion, this silhouette isn’t working for her. I think you have to be completely fitted with more of a column dress like Olivia Wilde at the Golden Globes, or drapey like Kerry Washington. That being said, the fact that she is even standing up and walking around is impressive to me, let alone all dressed up.

Kristin Chenoweth: I’m all for a metallic, but I don’t think this dress is doing her any favors. It seems reminiscent of both art deco and 70’s glamour, which sounds good in theory, but I think she can do better. Perhaps a tan and better makeup would have been to her advantage.
