Hits and Misses

Memorial Day sales, means a new round of hits and misses. I am shopping for warm weather for both work and play. I ordered a couple things online which I’m still waiting on, but I also spent some quality time in the dressing rooms this weekend. Here’s where I’m at so far:

Hits

So these shorts from JCrew are a hit for sure, but here’s the hesitation. They are cute and super lightweight and comfy, but I can’t really tell if they’re flattering. And that probably means they aren’t flattering. But whatever. You can’t win them all. These would be great for traveling or “summer activities” that aren’t full on athletics.

My mom laughed at me because when I saw this in the store on the mannequin, I said- oh that skirt is a very good look for me. I confirmed my suspicion in the fitting room. I do very well with pencil skirts, and the ruffle just makes it better. I think I’m going to use this more for dress up social occasions with a white top and strappy sandals, but I think I could make it work for work as well.

This is a super comfy basic tank from Banana. I got this modal version in black and the linen version in white. I love the exaggerated rounded hem. Perfect to tuck into a skirt, or just wear with shorts (like the ones above!). I think this is mostly weekend wear, but I could probably wear it under a blazer at work. I love when I find a great new basic.

I am in constant need of basic undershirts, so this was an easy choice from Loft. This will be perfect under low cut blouses or dresses. The lace neckline adds a little more finish than the standard tank. I almost bought multiples, but I restrained myself.

Misses

I thought this sheath from JCrew would be perfect for work. I ordered it in black. Not cute. The waist was really high and the drapey detail made the top puff out in an awkward way. It just looked frumpy. There aren’t any online reviews for it, but it’s on super sale now so I’m wondering if they got the message. I wanted to like it but it was a return.

Another JCrew item that I wanted to like. The fit was off for me on these chambray joggers. The waist and ankles were loose but the rear end was more fitted. It made for another awkward look. It was probably good that I didn’t buy them, because between my shorts and white jeans, I’m not sure if I there is room for these in the summer wardrobe. Oh well, I was glad I tried them on in the store.

Let’s be honest. I tried this on for fun. I saw it in Banana and I was trying other stuff on, so I added it to the pile just to see what would happen. Surprise, surprise, not very cute. The inseam was a bad length for me, and I’m not sure if I’m on board with the ruffle at the hem of the shorts. Also, for the record- getting in and out of a long sleeve button up romper or jumpsuit takes some serious contortion skills.

The sight of this jumpsuit in Banana made me happy so I tried it on. Magenta has become somewhat of a signature color for me, so I thought this would be fun addition to my collection. The problematic section- as it is on many jumpsuits- is the section from the waist to the crotch. Not the best, so it unfortunately did not come home with me.

Did you have any shopping luck over the weekend?
