Boudin: Maker of the Original San Francisco Sourdough

Over Easter break, Karla and I had the pleasure of visiting the other side of the country. We went to the West Coast for the first time and landed ourselves in the fabulous city of San Francisco. It was an eye-opening experience for me. As Karla found out, it was the first time I took a public bus. Who knew you had to pull a chord to let them know you wanted to get off at the next stop? Certainly not this small town girl. After a week, I was glad to find myself back in small town America.

We found some great places in this city. Over the next few blog entries you will be hearing about them. Most have to do with food…OBVI! The first place I loved was Boudin Bakery and Restaurant. They are known for their sourdough bread and supply their wonderfully crusty on the outside chewy on the inside bread to most of the restaurants in the area. But not only do they have a magnificent bakery, but they have a stellar menu in their restaurant upstairs as well.

IMG_0975 This is a basil gimlet. I do love my gin drinks!  I also had a moscow mule, served in a traditional copper cup, which was equally as delicious.

Don’t miss out on Boudin the next time you are in San Francisco. I even saw a man eating a Boudin baguette by the mouthful on our plane ride home. Guess that souvenir didn’t make it home!

Top Three of Kennebunkport, ME

Over the weekend I had the pleasure of going to Kennebunkport, Maine. If you are asking yourself, where have I heard about this place before, here is the answer. It is the place where the Bush family spends their summer among many other places I am sure. It is a quaint little town that will bring pure relaxation and pleasure to your life. With a view of the shoreline and the sweet smell of the ocean air, it is a great place to escape the hustle and bustle of your daily life. We stayed at The Beach House (1), which I highly recommend. There is a cocktail hour in the afternoon where you can enjoy a glass of port or brandy, or simply just a cup of tea. They also serve breakfast in the morning to all their guests. The staff makes you feel at home and are very accommodating to your needs.

I also recommend Joshua’s Restaurant (2) for a classy dinner. They feature the trifecta: always freshness first, organic or natural second, local or from Maine third. With a combination like this, the dishes are delightful to the tastebuds. Their creations are pure perfection. You can check their menu here.

As we headed back to Boston, we stopped at the Maine Diner (3). It was featured on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives on the Food Network. They specialize in breakfast dishes that feature Maine lobster and Maine blueberries. It’s inexpensive and a great way to start the day. Wherever you decide to stay or eat in Kennebunkport, I can ensure you will be one happy customer if you take my suggestion.

Last weekend was my mom’s birthday, so as a treat, we met up in Washington DC and had a little girls weekend.  Neither of us have spent much time in DC recently so it was fun to try some new restaurants and do some sight seeing.

One of the highlights of the trip for me was visiting the Library of Congress.  I know that sounds kind of nerdy, but hear me out.  As you may or may not know, I am a big fan of Mr. Thomas Jefferson. The Library of Congress was basically started by TJ selling Congress his personal library.  So we took a tour at the main Library of Congress building (there are several ancillary buildings around DC), and there were several references to TJ throughout the tour. There was even an exhibit that was a replication of his original library as he would have laid it out in his house.

The building was a lot more ornate on the inside then I was expecting. It was basically decorated wall to wall with paintings, mosaics, and sculptures. Every piece of art was chalk full of symbolism of muses, historical references, and lots of famous faces.  I took a couple shot on my phone but they don’t do the building justice. You should definitely stop by if you’re in town!  There are several rooms and exhibits that don’t allow pictures so there is plenty more to see!
