SAG Awards Best and Worst

The SAG awards is always an interesting fashion event because there is usually a little more creativity than the Golden Globes or the Academy Awards, but this year there were some really chic simple gowns. I’m not sure if this is valid, but I felt like there was some star power missing from the show. And by star power I mainly mean Benedict Cumberbatch, the only star who matters (I also didn’t see Mark Ruffalo, Kate Hudson, Tina Fey, Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner, or Channing Tatum). I will forgive him though because his fiance is expecting, so maybe they have to pick their moments this year. (Speaking of pregnant: Is Amy Poehler pregnant? I can’t tell, and it’s always awkward to ask… I didn’t even know she had a boyfriend.)

I borrowed the images from People.com.

My Best:

Felicity Jones

Felicity Jones: This is a perfect combination of interesting and understated. I love the architectural detail and the perfect fit. She looks flawless, timeless, glamorous, elegant…

Reese Witherspoon

Reese Witherspoon: Another chic simple gown. Reese always stays pretty simple, but it usually looks great, and this was no exception. The back was interesting as well. She’s now a regular on my best list!

Emmy Rossum

Emmy Rossum: I thought this was a great combination of pretty, interesting, flattering, and fashionable. I love a lace motif, and this is a great spin on the standard lace overlay dress. I’m not thrilled with the middle part bangs, but you can’t win ’em all.

My Worst:

Rashida Jones

Rashida Jones: This is just not doing it for me. The hair and makeup is nice and the silhouette is not hideous but I don’t really get the print and trim. It looks like it could be the makings of a great apron, but it doesn’t seem like a formal enough print/color for the red carpet.

Meryl Streep

Meryl Streep: This kills me a little because who would want to be negative about Meryl. The problem is that I could wear this dress to work, and frankly, it wouldn’t be one of my “dressy” days. She was a nominee! She pretty much does this for every awards show, I would love to see her do a gown and wear something other than black. Also, would it kill you to wear a necklace with that v-neck?

Claire Danes

Claire Danes: I don’t get it. The fabric looks like drapes, and the belt kills it. It’s baggy and not particularly flattering. I know Ms. Danes likes to be fashion forward in a creative way, but better luck next time. I will say, though, hair and makeup is pretty great.

Fashion at the Oscars

Just when I thought awards season was done, the Academy Awards snuck in at the end. I actually did not watch much of the actual show (I’ve already seen enough of this year’s batch of nominees), but of course I watched the red carpet. It looked like white and very pale colors were a huge trend this year. Some people made it look elegant, and some people made it look like they were just wrapped in sheets or toilet paper. All in all, though, I think people were pretty safe, there were no drop dead fashion forward stunners, and no catastrophes, I guess people are taking the Oscars seriously.

As usual I borrowed the pictures from People.com.

The Best:

Amy Adams: This look is not so dis-similar from her SAG choice, but when it works, it works! The color is great for her, and I love a simple dress with some interesting structural elements.

AmyOscars

Kate Hudson: This is the definition of glamour. Definitely riding the white and metallic trends, I think this is a good mix of fashion forward and classic.

KateOscars

Cate Blanchett: I think this is the best she’s looked so far this year. She definitely looks better than many starlets half her age. It’s unique but fabulous.

The Worst:

Lupita Nyong’o: She had a really good run this year, but I am not thrilled with her final dress of the season (that being said, I’m sure she’ll be on many best dressed lists anyway). Lupita Nyong’o was making waves, but this choice seems kind of princessy and unflattering for her (not to mention the Cinderella headband). I wish the color was richer and the structure on the bodice wasn’t so blah.

LupitaOscars

Elsa Pataky: (aka Chris Hemsworth’s wife) I am going to hell for saying this, I am sorry. In my opinion, this silhouette isn’t working for her. I think you have to be completely fitted with more of a column dress like Olivia Wilde at the Golden Globes, or drapey like Kerry Washington. That being said, the fact that she is even standing up and walking around is impressive to me, let alone all dressed up.

ElsaOscars

Kristin Chenoweth: I’m all for a metallic, but I don’t think this dress is doing her any favors. It seems reminiscent of both art deco and 70’s glamour, which sounds good in theory, but I think she can do better. Perhaps a tan and better makeup would have been to her advantage.

Who were your best and worst?

The Grammys: Pretty and Crazy

You can’t really do a “best and worst” dressed for the Grammys because it’s usually a lot more creative in the clothes department than the average awards show. So I went with “pretty and crazy” because I don’t want to judge the crazy outfits, I just want to identify them so you can draw your own conclusions. (all the pics come from People.com as usual)

Pretty

Colbie Caillat: This beach girl cleans up pretty good. It’s a tad formal for the Grammys, but when it works, it works!

ColbieCaillat

Ciara: For a pregnant woman, I like that she picked something a little interesting but still flattering. Sometimes she can be a little extra fashion forward, but this look strikes a balance between fashion and glamour.

Ciara

Chrissy Teigen: Another good choice in gold. Nothing too original, but I think she does look fabulous.

Crazy

Zendaya: This is just strange. Usually, she’s a little sleeker and more modern, but this one is a miss.

Zendaya

Katy Perry: I guess Katy Perry was trying to be a little whimsical with this, but it has musical notes on it… It’s a little obvious. She reminds me of the school teacher from the Magic School Bus who dressed according to the lesson plan.

KatyPerry

Sara Bareilles: I don’t think this overly offensive but it’s not a good look. Between the high-low hem and the feathers it’s just a little too weird.
