Gift Guide 2015: Part 1

I know what you’re thinking- it’s October.

People.

Shopping is a year ’round sport and there are some holiday gifts that require some advanced notice, so you’re going to need to think ahead of Cyber Monday for these ones. I’m talking about personalized and monogrammed merchandise. If you want to look thoughtful, get them something with their name or initials on it!

Let’s do this by recipient:

Guys in your life

Converse Kicks

Personalized Sneakers.  I have bought these for myself and for presents. They are always a hit! Almost every mainstream sneaker brand does a personalized option where you can pick the color and sometimes material for each panel, and add a monogram. I’ve had good success with Nike, Adidas, and Converse. If I were you, I would go for more of a lifestyle look rather than some high tech running shoe because they’ll want to show them off when they are out and about with friends. Converse is a little more affordable, but get ready to go above $100 for Nike, Adidas, or New Balance.

Friend/Family Couple

West Elm Canvas Totes

Canvas Tote. Let me tell you. I got this canvas tote (the above with the “E” on it) for my parents a couple years ago for them to use as a beach bag. It got a little bit of delayed reaction because I gave them a beach bag in December, but come July it was their new favorite thing. You could totally grab one of these from West Elm or the classics from LLBean or Lands End, and fill it with some other fun things: throw blanket, beach towels, bottle of wine, gourmet food stuffs, candles, etc. Depending on the contents you pick, it would be perfect for a newlyweds first holiday season, a hostess/holiday gift for overnight holiday visits, or a housewarming/holiday present to new homeowners.

Girls in your life

Mono_pouch

Travel pouches or toiletry bags. These are probably more of a stocking stuffer, but always useful and can be colorful and fun, or quite elegant depending on the recipient you have in mind. My instinct for this genre is Mark and Graham. They have a wide range of pouches, toiletry bags, jewelry rolls, tech cases, you name it.

Grandparents

Wool_Throw

Something warm: throw blankets or bathrobes. I always think of comfy, and easy care things for my grandparents. Because my grandparents are often cold, a nice throw blanket seems like the perfect option, and I think it helps if it’s machine washable like the above washable wool from The Company Store. It will hopefully upgrade their living room and get a lot of use. All the home stores have throws with monogramming available, so you have options. Also, a nice new fleece bathrobe would probably be much appreciated.

And one more for the Girls

PaperSource

Personalized notepads. I’m a big fan of stationary, and personalized notepads are a great, and affordable, gift for almost any friend, mom, or aunt on your list. I usually rely on Paper Source for my stationary needs (of which there are many). I recently needed to restock my own notepad supply for my regular list making, and I went with these. Most notepad sets at Paper Source are $35, and if notepads don’t inspire you, they have several other personalized stationary options.

Suns Out Guns Out

Even though I hit the gym year-round, there’s something about the spring that makes me think, it’s time for a gym wardrobe refresh! Here are a couple things I’ve grabbed over the last couple months and a couple things I have my eye on.

Gym Shoes:

NewBalancesneaks

I got these a couple months ago and I love them! They are super cute, comfortable, supportive, but very lightweight. Basically the best of all worlds. I was dabbling with Nike shoes for a while, but now I’m happy to be back with New Balance! (and they’re on sale right now at Athleta!)

UA Tank:

UAtank

Even though I’m not usually a logo girl, I love a placement print, and if there’s anywhere I will wear a logo, it’s definitely the gym. This top is easy breezy cotton. It’s perfect for those days when you’re not looking for a super skimpy, skin tight top (which is most days for me).

Coordinating Cropped “Joggers”:

UAjoggers

Again with the placement print. These aren’t necessary for my workouts, but it’s the perfect lounge solution. Comfortable, easy to wear, but not oversized and ratty like those college sweats. (I have them in grey)

Carrie Underwood Seamless Capris:

CUcapris

Have you seen Carrie’s new line of workout gear at Dicks Sporting Goods? There are some really cute things! Also, I did some comparison shopping and while her prices are not necessarily bargain basement, they are consistently lower than the big names in fitness apparel, and the quality seems very comparable. It seems like everyone sells a seamless capri these days, but these have some serious shaping properties (almost to the point of muffin top, so be careful about sizing). They are very comfortable!

On my wish list:

Nike Epic Run Shorts:

Epic

During the warmer months I like to run outside in 5 inch Nike Pro shorts. The only downside is that they’re very basic so they lack a couple features like a zip pocket for keys. These Epic Run Lux shorts are pricier than my typical shorts, but they’re designed specifically for running and the zip pocket might be worth it!

Nike Gradient Top:

I like that this top has some interest but isn’t too obnoxious, and these also have a zip pocket for keys! It takes some effort to find the right kind of sports bra, or capris that stay put, but tanks are easy so I always forget about them. This would be great for my weekly summer runs, or just the gym.

Wanted: New and Pretty Spring and Summer Outfits

Even though we still have a couple solid months of chilly temperatures ahead of us, I have already been browsing the stores for lighter fabrics, shorter hemlines, and fun warm weather patterns. All of my usual haunts have started to put out their spring and summer lines, so here are some basics that are on my wish list so far:

For Work:

jcrewpants

These pants from J.Crew are colorful, chic, and machine washable. Enough said. With dress pants I’ve realized that I need to try them on before I buy (I usually avoid trying things on). So I will definitely be finding some time to visit a J.Crew in the coming months to make sure I pick the right fit.

AnnTaylordress

This dress from Ann Taylor is pretty simple, but I love a good sheath and I could easily pair it with a bright cardigan or a plain blazer and wear it clear into the fall. Easy peasy.

BananaBlouse

Black and white seems to be on trend this spring, surprise, surprise. This hits all of my requirements for a work shirt: blousey (forgiving), white, unique geometric print, and timeless. Plus it easily doubles as a casual look with jeans.

For Play:

slubsweater

J.Crew Factory is killing it right now! I have a similar slub sweater from there that I got last year. I wear it all the time and I think I need a new color. Other cute things from J.Crew Factory include: this, and I need stock up on these.

jcrewshorts

Here’s another need from J.Crew Factory. Because who doesn’t need blue leopard print shorts? (And speaking of leopard print, I really needed new gym sneaks so I just ordered these)

gapshorts

I might need a new pair of jean shorts, and these ones from Gap look perfect. They have a real finished hem (an upgrade from my current cut-off version), and they’re a good wash. Even though I might be pushing the age limit for short shorts, I’ve realized that dressing for my figure means shorts that are 3 or 4 inch inseams. Honest to G**, my muscular quads make longer shorts look awkward.

 Investment Piece:

blushleather

I saw this in Banana ads but it didn’t register with me how fabulous it was until I saw it in a magazine as well. I love a blush/nude anything and I think it will go with everything. I could definitely use a good spring jacket. I’m keeping my eyes open for a sale or similar alternatives at other stores to make sure I make the best choice!

As we know, my new year’s resolution is to have an efficient wardrobe, so these choices are obvious relatively neutral and timeless (blue leopard is always in season). A few are in my “shopping cart” but I’m doing some comparison shopping and waiting for some sales. We’ll see what makes it home!

What has caught your eye in the stores so far?
