The SAG Awards’ Best and Worst

Here we go with the second awards show of the season. I thought there were some higher highs and some lower lows from a fashion perspective as compared to the Golden Globes last week. The name of the game was simple and perfectly tailored. It’s the busier, blousier dresses where people seemed to get into trouble. (photos from People.com again)

The Best:

Amy Adams: This blue is spot on for her red hair and fair complexion. Though her Golden Globes look got praise, I think this was an improvement.

Amy Adams

Jennifer Garner: Super simple, nothing new, but dare I say perfect? It’s hard to look better than this.

Jennifer Garner

Cara Theobold: I don’t know who this is, but she can pick a dress. I like how this is nothing outrageous, but it’s not the average sleeve, or print placement. Classic but interesting.

Cara Theobold

Elisabeth Moss: It’s got to be difficult picking several perfect dresses to wear throughout awards season. Elisabeth is definitely off to a great start this season. Plus she got the orange-red memo like many others this year as well.

The Worst:

Claire Danes: This one has a lot of different textures going on and a weird cut, plus her makeup looks a little scary to me. Not my favorite from Ms. Danes.

Claire Danes

Edie Falco: Can you say unflattering? Between the silhouette and the bohemian print, I don’t really understand why she made this choice.

Edie Falco

Amanda Peet: Is she serious? In what world is this flattering, pretty, or glamorous? Amanda needs a refresher course on red carpet fashion.

Amanda Peet

Meryl Streep: I didn’t want to have to do this, because it’s Meryl. I wasn’t going to, but she was mediocre at the Golden Globes as well. She’s just not trying anymore. I get it, it’s not her thing to find a fabulous gown, but we can do better than this Meryl.

Beginning of Awards Season!

So as you probably know, last night was the Golden Globes. Last year I saw almost every movie that was nominated, but this year I’m kind of out of the loop, and I’ve only seen a couple. And even though I’m a regular TV watcher, apparently none of my shows are award worthy. So let’s put the actual awards aside and talk fashion.

I was a little surprised with the fashion this year. I felt like the mid-range big famous actresses were kind of boring and predictable. But as I flipped through the red carpet pictures, the real stunners were a lot of younger actresses that I don’t recognize, plus the older women have really gotten it together. No more are the women north of 60 wearing boring mother-of-the-bride-esque frocks, they had some real stunners this year!

Here are a few actresses/dresses that stood out to me. (I got all the pics from the People.com gallery of arrivals)

The Best:

Elisabeth Moss: Sometimes Elisabeth Moss makes some questionable fashion choices, but I think this one is a perfect combination of interesting, flattering, and fashionable.

Elisabeth

Lupita Nyong’o in Ralph Lauren: I think this is pretty self explanatory.

Lupita

Kate Beckinsale: Oh, hello movie star! I know head to toe metallic is done quite often, but I think this is a worthy version. It might not be high fashion but I think Kate knows what she’s doing here.

Kate

Margot Robbie: This is apparently the girl in Wolf of Wall Street. I had to look her up because I haven’t seen that movie. I think this dress is the perfect balance of fashion, sex appeal, bling, and a flattering silhouette. Well done! (but I’m not sure about the shoes…)

Margot

The Worst:

Sandra Bullock: Really Sandra? You can do better than this. She’s been doing so well in her recent press junkets for her movies, but this shiny color blocking with the hi-low hem is just too many trends in one dress. This reminds me a little of when the fairies had a fight over Sleeping Beauty’s dress color.

Sandra

Kaley Cuoco Sweeting: I think this dress is just kind of blah. I bet the print and the colors look better in person, but it just comes across pretty muddy to me. Kaley is always a free spirit on the red carpet, I guess this is what happens.

Kaley

Zooey Deschanel: I might get some flack for this, but while I like the idea of this dress, I’m not a fan of wearing such a pale color dress with porcelain skin. I think it really washes her out. I get her whole retro aesthetic, but between the color and the cut of the sleeves and the skirt, it’s not working for me.

Zooey

Lena Dunham in Zac Posen: I don’t think it’s particularly flattering either in color or shape, and I feel like this silhouette/fabric has been done so many times. It’s a big step forward for her, but not interesting.

Goals for 2014

Last year I had a laundry list of goals in several different categories, and I think I did a pretty good job of achieving a lot of them. This year, however, I’m going to make a little simpler, and have a shorter list. Here goes:

1. Replace my morning mocha with tea. My office has a Flavia machine (similar to a Keurig), that I typically use once or twice daily to make myself a mocha (on this machine it’s really 1/3 hot chocolate and 2/3 coffee). I like that this is a free beverage option (rather than making regular Starbucks runs as with previous jobs), but I think tea would be a better alternative. I’m not ruling out the occasional fancy coffee drink, but making it more occasional is the goal.

2. Reduce my sugar intake on a regular basis. I know, I know, this is very vague, but it basically means I’m going to make an effort to curb my sweet tooth. Nothing bothers me more than when someone says, “you know, I’m not much for dessert, I’ve never really had a sweet tooth.” No one asked you, go sit in the corner. I typically only want sweet food, so my goal here is to stick to a less sweet routine, because I think it will make me crave sweet less often. Just like the mocha thing, I’m trying to break some habits.

3. Follow the stock market regularly. I find the stock market pretty fascinating and intimidating, and I check various stocks from time to time. This year I pick a few stocks I’m interested in, and I’m trying to check them on Yahoo Finance everyday. I’ve been very interested in the athletic apparel recently because I think Lululemon is in the process of taking a big hit from more cost friendly competitors like Athleta (part of the Gap group) and Under Armour. I want to watch that play out, so I’m following all of them, plus Nike and Adidas (it’s a two for one since they own Reebok), and Pepsi for good measure. I never felt too comfortable with finance class in business school, but with all the case studies we did, I learned it’s kind of fun to follow a few companies and watch their progress. Speaking of which, can we talk about Lulu’s December:Lulu

4. Be Better, Faster, Stronger. No specific fitness goals this year in terms of races I want to run or times I was to get. I just want to continue to be committed to my regular workouts, and continue to improve. I was going through a slower running phase last fall, so I’m hoping to snap out of that and pick up the pace. Plus I think if I put a little more effort/consistency into my weight workouts I could up my weights a little, and get stronger. And Pilates as much as possible, because I love it! When you’re stressed for time it’s hard to push the envelope at the gym, so hopefully I can make some time for that.

5. Blog more regularly. I went from blogging very regularly when Carrie and I started the blog, to being very sporadic this year, so hopefully I will find a new rhythm in the 2014! (and maybe Carrie will too, wink, wink, nudge, nudge)

Are you sticking to the typical resolutions this year, or did you pick something that’s more out of the box?
