Academy Awards 2016: Best and Worst

I think simplicity really won out this year for red carpet fashion. There was a lot of color, but generally solid simple frocks. There were definitely no swans and barely any ball gowns. People kept it simple this year. I think, if anything, draping and architectural details were trends this year, weather it was extra swags of fabric or an architectural accent on the bodice. Here are my best and worst.

As always the photos are from People.com.

Best

Saoirse Ronan looks stunning in this green beaded gown. It’s kind of everything at once because it’s completely beaded but I think the emerald color makes it less flashy than a metallic gold or silver beaded gown. The color is so great for her and it’s definitely a great pic for a nominee. I might have done a necklace rather than statement earrings, but to each their own.

I really liked Olivia Munn’s dress. The color was great for her and the silhouette is innovative but simple and flattering. She could have amped up the earrings a little, but besides that it’s pretty perfect.

Sarah Silverman has definitely gotten better over time with her style. I think she’s keeping it low key because she is probably more of a plus one for the Awards (though I know she’s been doing some more serious stuff lately). Her dress is understated but flawless.

Worst

I was disappointed by Brie Larson. I thought she did really well at the other awards shows this year, but this is kind of blah to me. It’s giving me prom dress. I think she could have done better, especially for a big nominee.

Reese Witherspoon was another snooze for me. I realize she’s not a nominee so maybe she didn’t have to be as on point as last year, but I think we could have done something more interesting or sleeker than this. It was also a very similar in color and cut to Tina Fey, but I think Tina’s was better.

To complete the prom dress trifecta, I think Emily Blunt is 90’s prom all day. I know 90’s style is kind of in right now, but I don’t think this dress is doing anything for her. It washes her out and the cut is not particularly flattering. (Also, is she pregnant? I forget)

Springing Fashion Forward

Based on every new spring line so far, the two huge trends this upcoming season are lace and nautical stripes. I realize that these are perennial favorites but they seem really huge this year. Here are some of the items I’ve had my eye on so far:

Nautical Stripes

Work:

Ann Taylor has this chic new striped sheath dress. The different panels of strips and the structured silhouette makes it a little more interesting then the standard striped shift dress that you’re seeing everywhere. This might be a must have for me. I also like this striped number from Anthro.

Weekend:

This is easy. Get a classic boatneck striped tee shirt. It’s basically seasonless and easy to wear around the house or pair with a jacket and jeans for day on the town. Almost every retailer has something like this but the one above is JCrew, JCrew Factory has similar options, and Loft and Gap have several comparable sweater and tee shirt versions.

Brunch:

This dress from Banana makes getting ready for brunch very easy. Throw it on with fun sandals and assorted jewelry and you’re all set. There are also some fun nautical shorts that would make a full outfit with the addition of a plain tee shirt.

Lace

Work:

There are a lot of lace dresses out there, but that reads a little too wedding guest to wear to work in my opinion. I like this skirt from Ann Taylor that has geometric lace pattern, rather than something floral. I like all kinds of lace, but this fresh take seems a little more work appropriate than the all over flower patterns. Ann Taylor also has a similar version with a floral border, and a lace pencil skirt.

Weekend:

I love a statement short, and these ones from the Loft are right on trend. The easy part is that you just need a plain tee shirt. They will add some fun to your weekend errands and outings.

Brunch:

I love this bright lace top from Anthro. It would make a pair of jeans look so chic if you’re meeting friends for a meal on the weekend. I think you could also pair this with a simple pencil skirt and wear to work in the summer. Ann Taylor also has several lace blouses this season.

Meanwhile…

One other trend I’m curious about is deconstructed denim. I’m a little torn (pun intended) because I don’t want to buy pants with holes in them, but sometimes DC is so preppy it makes me want to buy pants with holes in them. I may have ordered these from the Gap (I got them at a discount figuring it wouldn’t be a big investment if I don’t love the outcome).

New Things at Ann Taylor

Since Ann Taylor is the DC uniform, I keep pretty close tabs on their merchandise. Recently, there as been a noticeable change in the aesthetic. In case you haven’t heard, the Creative Director over at The Loft’s Lou & Grey line took over the creative directing at all three brands. Austyn Zung is definitely breathing some new life into the brand. I don’t think it’s a dramatic change but we are definitely seeing different fabric, color, and silhouette choices. Looking though the preview of the collection, I’m interested to see what they release in stores next.

There are a lot of two piece outfits:
