Workout Songs: Part 5

When I go to a group fitness class, the instructor always says that the cool down is the most important part of the workout.  Usually at that point I’m antsy to get out of the room and on with my day, so it takes all of my power to find patience and stretch with the group.  One thing that helps is good music.  There is a lot more freedom for cool down music because it does not have to have a certain cadence.  It adds a nice level of variety to the workout mix.  On principle I try to stick with positive, uplifting cool down songs, but every once in a while there’s an irresitable darker ballad that makes it on the list.  Here’s what I’ve been listening to lately.

Cool Down/Relaxing Music

  1. How Will I Know (Glee Version) by Glee Cast
  2. The Longest Time by Billy Joel
  3. Sunday Morning by Maroon 5
  4. Hero by Mariah Carey
  5. Heartless by Kris Allen
  6. Ave Maria by Beyonce
  7. Stickwitu by Pussycat Dolls
  8. Everything by Michael Buble

Workout Songs: Part 4

So far we’ve covered three workout song genres: Old School, Top 40, and Girl Power.  This time we’re at the meat of the workout when you need all the motivation you can get to push through and get to the cool down.  That requires music that is a little more serious than the previous categories.  I need some hardcore/motivational music that can come from a few different genres.  I tend to pull from some heavier rap songs, punk rock, and some girl power music that is extra intense.  Here are some songs that have gotten me to the top of the mountain (or stair climber…)

Hardcore/Motivational Songs

  1. Lose Yourself by Eminem
  2. Not Listening by Papa Roach
  3. Stronger by Kanye West
  4. I’m Talkin to You by T.I.
  5. Last Resort by Papa Roach
  6. Dangerous by Akon
  7. All I Do is Win by DJ Khaled
  8. Scream by Usher
  9. I’m Not Okay by My Chemical Romance
  10. Hard by Rihanna feat. Jeezy
  11. Titanium by David Guetta feat. Sia
  12. Ring the Alarm by Beyonce
  13. Bring Me To Life by Evanescence
  14. Hey Batter Batter by Trent Tomlinson
  15. I Need a Doctor by Dr. Dre feat. Eminem
  16. Through the Wire by Kanye West
  17. Numb/Encore by Linkin Park and Jay Z
  18. More by Usher
  19. Misery Business by Paramore
  20. Take it Away by The Used

I realize that not all of these are seriously hardcore, but they seem to have the right words to get me through the hard part of the workout.

Workout Songs: Part 3

Aside from the Old School and Top 40 tracks, one key part of my workout music repertoire is the girl power genre.  Some days that’s exactly what I need to get motivated and keep me focused during my workout.  Some of my favorite artists are perennial members of this genre, and I pretty much celebrate their whole  catalogue.  Regardless of the specific song lyrics I will usually find motivation in songs by Beyonce, Kelly Clarkson, Ciara, Rihanna, The Pussycat Dolls, and several others.  There are a lot of good choices in this area of music, here are some of my favorites.

Girl Power Songs

  1. Raining Men by Rihanna feat Nikki Minaj
  2. Stronger by Kelly Clarkson
  3. Here I Come by Fergie
  4. Pretty Girl Rock by Keri Hilson
  5. Born This Way by Lady Gaga
  6. Hit Me With Your Best Shot by Pat Benetar
  7. Since You’ve Been Gone by Kelly Clarkson
  8. Get Me Bodied by Beyonce
  9. Trouble by Pink
  10. Fly by Nicki Minaj
  11. We Run This by Missy Elliot
  12. Rumor Has It by Adele
  13. Fergalicious by Fergie
  14.  Diva by Beyonce
  15. I Don’t Need a Man by The Pussycat Dolls
  16. So What by Pink

  20. Check On It by Beyonce

Stay tuned for Hardcore/Motivational songs, and Cool Down music.
