Last Five

Songs I downloaded on iTunes.

  1. Love in the Dark by Adele. I’m slowly accumulating Adele’s music, and while I love this song, I’m not so crazy about her latest single Send My Love (to your new lover). The verses are fine, the chorus is weird.
  2. Dance in the Graveyards by Delta Rae. I went to an A Capella concert a couple weeks ago in DC and this song was performed quite fabulously. It has a slightly morbid premise, but very joyful at the same time.
  3. Treat You Better by Shawn Mendes. This is a really catchy and sweet new tune from Shawn Mendes. I needed a new song on my playlist, and this fit the bill.
  4. Nothing But Trouble (Instagram Models) by Lil’ Wayne and Charlie Puth. This song is kind of hilarious, and a really good mix of Lil’ Wayne and Charlie Puth’s styles. It’s also just kind of funny to see these two do a song together. Charlie is getting some street cred with all of his fancy duets these days.
  5. Never Be Like You by Flume feat. Kai. This EDM song reminds me of a combination of Ellie Goulding and The Chainsmokers. It’s kind of chill and intense at the same time. I don’t really get the message, I think she cheated and she’s looking for forgiveness. I’ll have to listen again.

Hits and Misses

I’ve done a little summer shopping recently. Some good, some not so good…

Hits

This is a great breezy basic top from the Gap. It’s really cute and really comfortable. Bonus- unlike what seems to be the convention these days, it’s not completely see through!

I was looking for a blouse for work that isn’t supposed to be tucked in. I have a few slim pairs of pants that look great with more of peplum look rather than a tucked in shirt. This one from Ann Taylor is really pretty and perfect for work. It’s great with a cardigan, slim pants, and pumps.

This shirt is THE BEST. I actually got it in white with the iridescent Adidas logo, but the picture doesn’t do justice to how fly it is in person. I love it to pieces, and I feel super cool at the gym now!

I love these slubby, lightweight summer sweaters. I buy one or two every summer, so I’m starting to have a collection. It’s perfect with a pair of white jeans for a breezy summer dinner. This one is from Ann Taylor, but there are also comparable options from the other regular haunts that I’ve collected over the years.

Misses

Oh Banana. I ordered this long sleeve tee because I love a white shirt and I thought it had a lot more character than the standard tee. Turns out- not awesome. It’s very see through, and I’m not trying to wear an undershirt during the summer. I thought the bottom would be cool, but it drapes kind of awkwardly and I can see myself having to adjust it all day long. Back to the store.

I thought this sheath would be a home run from Ann Taylor. I recently bought a dress from Ann Taylor so I was confident in my size selection. This one, however, was huge on me. My waist was non-existent, it just hung. I hate inconsistent sizing. It was a return.

What pieces have worked for you recently?

Brotein Shake

This year, so far, I’ve tried to emphasize protein in my diet. Why am I trying to emphasize protein?

  1. I’m not a big meat eater, so I’m always looking for alternatives that actually have a significant amount of protein.
  2. Since I’m a gym rat, I know that eating protein will help support my workouts.
  3. I’ve realized that I physically feel better when my meals are protein focused rather than carb focused. I feel fuller, longer and I have more energy.

To supplement my real food sources of protein, I use protein powder and bars. Here are my go-tos:

My morning protein shake has Metabolic Nutrition Protizyme whey protein powder in the vanilla cake flavor. Something about metabolic protizyme screams delicious, right? It has 25 grams of protein per 122 calories which is one of the best ratios I’ve seen out there. And it only has 1 gram of sugar per serving. Plus the flavor and texture work well in my smoothie.

For my occasional post workout protein shake snack is Vega Protein & Greens in vanilla flavor. It’s a plant based protein powder that includes 2 servings of greens per scoop. The protein to calorie ratio is 20 grams per 110 calories. It’s not quite as delicious as my morning smoothie, but I think it really does the trick! Even just half a scoop helps out a lot! Pro tip- mix it with almond milk, never just water!

And lastly, when I’m traveling or on the go, I’m partial to thinkThin High Protein Bars. They are not extremely delicious, but very palatable and they do the job. They have 20 grams of protein for 240 calories which makes for a solid recovery snack or mid afternoon, I don’t know if I can make it to dinner, travel snack. It’s a real happy medium between the high calorie protein bars, and the dinky granola bars with 4 grams of protein and tons of sugar.

What are your creative, or not so creative, protein options?
